Sketchbook Challenge – Day 30

Day 30 – Draw a collection.

Do you collect anything? Maybe silver spoons. Figurines. Cookbooks or recipes.

Most people I know collect something.

Or, maybe you have a collection that you didn’t intentionally start but you just seem to have a bunch of that one thing. It could even be a collection of paper clips.

Regardless, today’s prompt asks you to draw that collection. Now, you don’t have to draw the entire collection. Maybe just a handful of that item.

Feel free to fill the page or just a part. But, take your time with each object and see them individually. Once you have sketch each one, now see how they work together to make a composition!

Sketchbook Challenge – Day 29

Day 29 – Draw something with wheels!

It can be anything with wheels, even if it only has one. Your subject can be a car, a big old bus, or a child’s toy.

You could even look up images to gain inspiration or, once again, use your imagination to create a new contraption. Maybe your object with wheels is in motion, or parked and waiting for the go!

Sketchbook Challenge – Day 28

Day 28 – Draw two objects that typically are not found together.

You can handle this sketch a few ways-

  1. You could simply use your imagination and juxtapose two objects together.
  2. You can find two objects in your home and create a unique composition.
  3. Or, you can do a Google search for random objects found together.

How you go about this is up to you! Have fun. Don’t be afraid to be creative and a little odd.

Pushing boundaries will help inspire more creativity.

I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Sketchbook Challenge – Day 27

Day 27 – Draw a view from one of your rooms inside your dwelling.

Maybe you are sitting in bed early in the morning. What do you see off in front of you?

Or, maybe you are sitting at the kitchen table. What do you see when you look straight ahead?

Perhaps you have a comfy chair in your living room. You can probably turn your head a variety of ways to find a view you would like to capture in your sketchbook!

It can be a wide perspective or a small one. Be brave. Try to capture the angle of where you are viewing that particular part of the room. Maybe set up a vanishing point to help guide your lines. No need to get too technical. It can be wonky and scribbly. And, it can be as detailed as you have time and patience for.

Sketchbook Challenge – Day 25

Day 25- Draw something you have found on the ground outside.

Maybe you are in a position to take a walk somewhere, maybe even around your neighborhood. When and if you do, notice what’s on the ground, underneath your feet.

Find an interesting object–It can be natural or it can be man-made. Maybe you will be lucky enough to find an object that clearly doesn’t belong out in the wild, but somehow landed in that exact spot, and at that exact time you were walking.

Study its shape and values. Try to capture its essence in your sketchbook.

If you are not in a position to walk outside, see if there is something that can be found on the floor wherever you are. Feel free to get creative!

Sketchbook Challenge – Day 24

Welcome to Day 24. Can you believe this month is almost over? And, can you believe you have been sketching every day? Yay!

Even if you haven’t, not to worry! Just pick up a pencil and start again.

OK! Here we go…Today’s prompt is to draw an animal.

It can be any animal of your choice–real or imagined. Use a real model or a photograph. If a photograph, try to pick one with strong contrast.

Remember, try to see the animal as shapes and values, rather than see it as the finished animal. Drawing is a  matter of seeing, and the more sketchbook practice you do of learning to see, the easier it will get. I do solemnly swear!

May you render your animal freely!

Sketchbook Challenge – Day 23

Today’s prompt: Something made from paper!

It really can be anything. A paper boat, a paper plate, origami. Anything made from paper.

It might be interesting to fold the paper to make an object before drawing it. This way, you would be spending time with your subject, getting to know the folds and creases.

If you want even more of a challenge, place your paper object in an imaginary place. If it’s a paper boat, let it drift on the ocean waves or get stuck in the sand on some beach. Or, maybe even set it to drift in the cosmos and pass too closely to Saturn.

Have fun with this!

Sketchbook Challenge – Day 22

For today’s prompt, Draw your hand.

First, you can decide if you want to draw the hand you are drawing with or your non-dominant one.

If you are new to drawing hands, you may want to choose to draw your non-dominant one. Position it in front of you as a still life.

Drawing hands is quite a challenge, as with any human aspect. It is perfectly normal to start off with wonky attempts. Here is what I would suggest:

Start off by drawing the contour lines of the overall hand shape. Then draw the outlines for each finger. Work from outside to inside when it comes to the details. Start with light layers and build upon those. See the hand not as a hand but more of an object composed of shapes within shapes. This tends to help!

You are welcome to have your hand holding something if you wish.

Remember, wonkiness is supposed to happen with this!

Sketchbook Challenge – Day 21

For today’s prompt, draw your keys.

Actually, draw any sort of keys! They can be loose, like in the image above, or attached to a key ring.

Keys attached to a key ring will allow for unique angles and interesting details. Again, this supports your practice of learning to see. Capture the tiny lines, the grooves, the shine.

As a bonus, include any interesting key chain items!

Sketchbook Challenge – Day 20

Can you believe we are at Day 20? Pause for a moment and celebrate the fact that you have been sketching and taking on these challenges since the beginning of the month. Keep going!

OK. For today’s prompt, we are going to draw a towel. Now, this is going to be a bit of a challenge because you have to use a very rigid tool in order to create something soft.

Place your towel in different positions until you like a composition you want to draw. You can fold it neatly or lay it out so that it has folds and crevices. It’s up to you!

Here’s a tip: Start light and work in layers. Light pressure. Light layers. Build up from those light layers gradually until you are satisfied. The tonal ranges in a towel will be soft and gradual. Don’t be in a hurry to darken it.

Remember, this is more about the practice and the learning to see than the end result. Don’t get stuck on the latter if it doesn’t match exactly what you envision.

Keep learning to see!
